Used For:

Azithromycin is an antibiotic in the macrolide class used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria, thereby helping to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria. Some common uses include:

  • Respiratory infections (e.g., pneumonia, bronchitis, sinusitis)
  • Ear infections (e.g., otitis media)
  • Throat infections (e.g., strep throat)
  • Skin infections (e.g., cellulitis)
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) (e.g., chlamydia, gonorrhea)
  • Gastrointestinal infections (e.g., traveler's diarrhea, caused by specific bacteria)
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations

Azithromycin is also used in the treatment of Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infections in people with weakened immune systems, such as those with HIV/AIDS.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Gastrointestinal issues (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain)
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Skin rash
  • Loss of appetite

Serious side effects (though rare) include:

  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing)
  • Heart arrhythmias, particularly QT prolongation (can cause abnormal heart rhythms)
  • Liver problems, indicated by symptoms such as jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or severe abdominal pain
  • Tendon damage or rupture, especially in older adults or those taking corticosteroids
  • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (a severe intestinal infection)

Precautions:

  • Heart conditions: Azithromycin can affect the heart's electrical system and may cause QT prolongation, leading to irregular heartbeats. It should be used with caution in individuals with existing heart conditions, particularly those with arrhythmias or a history of prolonged QT intervals.
  • Liver and Kidney function: Azithromycin is processed by the liver, and kidney issues can affect how the drug is cleared from the body. Liver disease may require dosage adjustments or alternative antibiotics.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Azithromycin is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but it should only be used when necessary. It is passed into breast milk in small amounts, so use during breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
  • Drug Interactions: Azithromycin may interact with certain medications, such as those affecting the heart rhythm (e.g., antiarrhythmics, other QT-prolonging drugs), and may require dosage adjustments or monitoring.
