Eszopiclone is a sedative-hypnotic medication primarily used to treat:
- Insomnia, particularly in individuals who have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep throughout the night.
Eszopiclone works by affecting chemicals in the brain (specifically GABA receptors) that help promote relaxation and sleep, making it easier for individuals to fall asleep and stay asleep.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
- Drowsiness or sleepiness (especially the next day)
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Unpleasant taste or a bitter taste in the mouth
- Fatigue
Less common but serious side effects include:
- Sleepwalking or engaging in other activities while not fully awake (e.g., driving, eating, or having sex without memory of it)
- Memory problems or confusion
- Hallucinations
- Severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips, or throat, difficulty breathing)
- Depressed mood or suicidal thoughts
Precautions:
- Next-Day Drowsiness: Eszopiclone can cause drowsiness the following day, impairing alertness and coordination. Avoid driving or performing activities that require full attention until you know how the medication affects you.
- Alcohol and Drug Interactions: Avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants (such as benzodiazepines or opioids) while taking eszopiclone, as this can increase the sedative effects, leading to dangerous side effects such as respiratory depression or severe drowsiness.
- Dependence and Withdrawal: Eszopiclone can cause physical and psychological dependence, especially if used for an extended period. It is usually recommended for short-term use, and it should not be stopped abruptly after prolonged use to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Eszopiclone is generally avoided during pregnancy, especially in the later stages, as it may harm the fetus. It is also passed into breast milk, so it should be used with caution during breastfeeding.
- Liver and Kidney Function: Individuals with liver or kidney problems should use eszopiclone with caution, as these conditions can affect how the drug is metabolized.
