Used For:

Cefotaxime Sodium is a cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Gonorrhea and other sexually transmitted infections
  • Bloodstream infections (septicemia)
  • Meningitis and other central nervous system infections

Cefotaxime works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, effectively killing the bacteria causing the infection.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Rash or itching

Less common but serious side effects include:

  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the face or throat)
  • Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (persistent diarrhea with stomach pain/cramping)
  • Blood disorders (anemia, low white blood cell count)
  • Kidney issues (reduced urine output, blood in urine)
  • Seizures (rare, but more likely if dose is too high or in those with kidney disease)

Precautions:

  • Allergies: Avoid Cefotaxime if you have a known allergy to cephalosporins or penicillins, as cross-reactivity can occur.
  • Kidney Function: Dose adjustments may be needed for individuals with kidney impairment.
  • Liver Disease: Use with caution in individuals with liver issues, as liver function can affect how the body processes antibiotics.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Generally considered safe, but it should be used only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.
  • Antibiotic-Associated Diarrhea: Notify your healthcare provider if you experience severe or persistent diarrhea, as it may indicate a serious condition.
