Used For:

  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): The 20 mg dose is usually prescribed when lower doses (such as 10 mg) are not sufficient to relieve depressive symptoms.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): It helps reduce symptoms of persistent anxiety, worry, and nervousness.
  • Panic Disorder: Used to manage recurring panic attacks.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Escitalopram can help reduce obsessive thoughts and compulsions.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder: May be prescribed to alleviate extreme fear of social situations.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea, dry mouth, headache, and drowsiness.
  • Sexual dysfunction: Decreased libido or difficulty achieving orgasm.
  • Insomnia or sleep disturbances.
  • Increased sweating.

Less common but serious side effects:

  • Serotonin syndrome: Rare but potentially life-threatening, marked by symptoms such as agitation, hallucinations, fever, or rapid heart rate.
  • Suicidal thoughts: Especially in younger adults (under 25), there may be an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior when starting the medication.

Precautions:
