Used For:

• Pneumonia: Treats bacterial pneumonia, especially when other antibiotics are ineffective.
• Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Effective for treating complicated skin infections, including those caused by MRSA.
• Bloodstream Infections: Treats bacteremia and septicemia caused by certain resistant bacteria.
• Multi-resistant Infections: Used for infections caused by multi-drug-resistant Gram-positive bacteria.

Side Effects:

1. Diarrhea
2. Nausea and Vomiting
3. Headache
4. Anemia (low red blood cell count)
5. Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), which may lead to increased bleeding or bruising
6. Peripheral Neuropathy (nerve damage), particularly with long-term use
7. Serotonin Syndrome (rare but serious), especially when combined with certain antidepressants (SSRIs or SNRIs)

Precautions:

• Blood Cell Monitoring: Regular blood tests are essential to monitor red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets due to the risk of bone marrow suppression.
• Avoid Certain Antidepressants: Combining linezolid with SSRIs, SNRIs, or other serotonergic drugs increases the risk of serotonin syndrome. Consult your healthcare provider if you're on these medications.
• Long-term Use Monitoring: Extended treatment can lead to peripheral or optic neuropathy. Patients on long-term therapy should report any vision changes or tingling sensations.
• Avoid Tyramine-rich Foods: Linezolid has mild MAO-inhibiting properties, so foods high in tyramine (e.g., aged cheeses, cured meats, fermented foods) may increase blood pressure and should be limited.
