Used For:

  1. Prevention of Blood Clots:
    • In hospitalized patients, especially those immobilized after surgery or prolonged bed rest.
  2. Treatment of Blood Clots:
    • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
    • Pulmonary Embolism (PE)
    • Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC)
  3. Cardiovascular Procedures:
    • During open-heart surgery or dialysis to prevent clotting in equipment.
    • In acute coronary syndromes, such as unstable angina or myocardial infarction.
  4. Catheter Maintenance:
    • Prevents clot formation in intravenous catheters.

Side Effects:

  1. Common:

    • Bruising or irritation at the injection site.
    • Mild bleeding (e.g., from gums or minor cuts).
  2. Serious:

    • Bleeding Complications: Excessive or uncontrollable bleeding.
    • Heparin-Induced Thrombocytopenia (HIT): A rare but severe immune reaction causing low platelet levels and an increased risk of clotting.
    • Osteoporosis with long-term use.
