Used For:

• Osteoporosis: Bonviva, also known as Ibandronate, is used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It helps increase bone density and reduce the risk of fractures by inhibiting bone resorption.

Side Effects:

• Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, abdominal pain, and dyspepsia (indigestion) are common.
• Musculoskeletal Pain: Pain in the muscles, joints, or bones.
• Headache: Can occur as a side effect.
• Esophageal Irritation: Risk of esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus) or esophageal ulcers if not taken correctly.
• Acute Phase Reaction: Flu-like symptoms such as fever, chills, and muscle pain, usually occurring shortly after starting the medication.
• Bone Pain: In rare cases, may cause severe bone, joint, or muscle pain.
• Hypocalcemia: Low calcium levels in the blood, especially in those with pre-existing conditions affecting calcium metabolism.

Precautions:

• Esophageal Health: To minimize the risk of esophageal irritation, take the tablet with a full glass of water while standing or sitting upright, and avoid lying down for at least 60 minutes afterward.
• Kidney Function: Use with caution in patients with kidney impairment, and monitor renal function regularly.
• Dental Health: Regular dental check-ups are recommended, as bisphosphonates like Bonviva can cause jawbone problems (osteonecrosis) in rare cases.
