  • Skin Conditions: Effective for eczema, psoriasis, dermatitis, and other inflammatory skin conditions.
  • Allergic Reactions: Treats symptoms of severe allergies, including asthma and allergic dermatitis.
  • Arthritis and Joint Inflammation: Helps relieve pain and swelling in joint-related conditions.
  • Autoimmune Disorders: Used for conditions like lupus and ulcerative colitis.
  • Hormonal Disorders: In some cases, used in adrenal insufficiency as replacement therapy.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects:
    • Skin irritation (topical use)
    • Weight gain
    • Increased appetite
    • Mood changes
  • Serious Side Effects (Long-term Use or High Dose):

    • Muscle weakness
    • Blood sugar elevation (risk for diabetics)
    • Cushing’s syndrome symptoms (fat accumulation, thinning skin)

Precautions:

  • Short-term Use Recommended: Long-term or high-dose use can lead to serious side effects. Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible.
  • Infection Risk: Betamethasone can suppress the immune system, so it may increase susceptibility to infections.
  • Avoid Abrupt Discontinuation: Stopping suddenly can lead to adrenal insufficiency. Always taper the dose gradually under medical supervision.

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before using betamethasone during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Topical Use: Avoid applying to broken skin or sensitive areas. Long-term use on the skin may lead to thinning or discoloration.
