Used For:

Linezolid is an antibiotic from the oxazolidinone class, used primarily to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those resistant to other antibiotics. Common uses include:

• Pneumonia: Effective for treating bacterial pneumonia, including community-acquired and hospital-acquired cases.
• Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Often used for infections caused by resistant bacteria, like MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
• Multi-drug Resistant Infections: Effective against gram-positive bacteria, especially in cases of infections that don’t respond to other antibiotics, like VRE (vancomycin-resistant enterococci).

  • Diarrhea

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness
• Less Common but Serious Side Effects:
  • Blood disorders (e.g., thrombocytopenia or low platelet count)
  • Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage causing tingling or numbness)
  • Lactic acidosis (symptoms: deep breathing, nausea, stomach pain, confusion)
  • Serotonin syndrome (risk increases when used with certain antidepressants)

Precautions:

• Blood Monitoring: Regular blood tests are often recommended during long-term use to monitor for blood disorders, especially in those with pre-existing blood conditions.
• Neuropathy Risk: Long-term use may increase the risk of peripheral and optic neuropathy. Report any symptoms of tingling, numbness, or visual changes.
• Interaction with Antidepressants: Linezolid can interact with SSRIs, SNRIs, and other antidepressants, raising the risk of serotonin syndrome. Inform your doctor of any medications you're taking.
• Dietary Restrictions: Linezolid is a weak MAOI (monoamine oxidase inhibitor), so avoid foods high in tyramine (like aged cheese, cured meats, and fermented foods) to prevent hypertensive reactions.
