Used For:

Avatrombopag is a thrombopoietin receptor agonist used to:

  • Treat thrombocytopenia (low platelet count) in adults with chronic liver disease scheduled for a medical procedure to reduce bleeding risks.

It works by stimulating platelet production in the bone marrow.

Side Effects:

Common side effects:

  • Headache

  • Nausea
  • Fever
  • Edema (swelling in the hands or feet)

Rare but serious side effects:

  • Blood clots (thrombosis), especially in patients with risk factors such as liver disease
  • Severe hypersensitivity reactions (rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing)

Precautions:

  1. Risk of Thrombosis:

    • Monitor for signs of blood clots, especially in patients with risk factors like advanced liver disease, prolonged immobility, or a history of thromboembolism.
  2. Liver Function:

    • Elevated liver enzymes may occur; periodic monitoring is recommended, especially in patients with liver disease.
  3. Platelet Monitoring:

    • Platelet counts should be monitored regularly to avoid excessive elevation, which may increase the risk of thrombosis.
  4. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

    • Use only if clearly needed during pregnancy. Limited data are available, and its safety in breastfeeding is not well established.
  5. Drug Interactions:

    • Inform your doctor about all medications, especially anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, or drugs affecting liver enzymes.

    • Treatment should be tailored based on individual response to minimize long-term risks associated with excessive platelet stimulation.
