Used For

Anastrozole is primarily used in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

  1. Breast Cancer Treatment

    • Used to treat early-stage breast cancer after surgery (adjuvant therapy).

    • Used to treat advanced or metastatic breast cancer that has spread.

  2. Prevention of Breast Cancer

    • Sometimes prescribed to reduce the risk of breast cancer in high-risk postmenopausal women.

  3. Off-label uses (less common):

    • Infertility treatment in some women.

    • Treatment of gynecomastia or testosterone-related conditions in men (under medical supervision).

Side Effects

Common and serious side effects may include:

  • Hot flashes

  • Joint pain or stiffness (arthralgia)

  • Weakness or fatigue

  • Mood changes

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Headache

  • Mild skin rash

Precautions

Before taking Anastrozole, you should:

  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding (it is not safe in pregnancy).

  • Have osteoporosis or are at risk of bone loss.

  • Have liver disease or high cholesterol.

  • Are taking estrogen-containing medications (they reduce anastrozole’s effect).

  • Have heart disease or poor circulation.

  • Calcium and Vitamin D supplements may be recommended to protect bones.

  • Regular bone density tests (DEXA scans) may be needed.

  • Avoid driving or heavy machinery if you feel dizzy or tired.

  • Do not stop the medication suddenly without consulting your doctor.
