Used For:
Alzilo Tablets 0.5mg is a medication primarily used to manage Parkinson’s disease. It belongs to a class of drugs known as monoamine oxidase-B inhibitors (MAO-B inhibitors) and is used to:
- Treat symptoms of Parkinson's disease, such as tremors, stiffness, slow movement, and impaired balance or coordination.
- Enhance the effects of levodopa: Rasagiline is often used alone in the early stages of Parkinson's or in combination with levodopa (another Parkinson’s medication) in more advanced stages to improve motor function.
Rasagiline works by inhibiting the breakdown of dopamine in the brain, which helps to maintain higher levels of this neurotransmitter and improve motor control in people with Parkinson’s disease.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
- Headache
- Joint pain
- Indigestion or upset stomach
- Dizziness
- Nausea
- Dry mouth
Less common but serious side effects may include:
- High blood pressure (hypertension): Rasagiline may cause a sudden increase in blood pressure, especially when consumed with tyramine-rich foods (aged cheese, wine, cured meats, etc.).
- Hallucinations or confusion: More common when used in combination with levodopa, particularly in older adults.
- Impulse control disorders: Some people may experience compulsive behaviors, such as gambling or overeating.
- Serotonin syndrome: A rare but serious condition that can occur when rasagiline is combined with certain medications like antidepressants, leading to symptoms such as agitation, fever, and muscle stiffness.
- Falling or balance issues: People with Parkinson’s disease are at risk for falls, which can be exacerbated by dizziness or sudden blood pressure changes.
Precautions:
- Tyramine-rich foods: While the risk of high blood pressure due to tyramine is lower with rasagiline compared to older MAO inhibitors, it's still advisable to avoid large amounts of aged cheeses, fermented foods, cured meats, and alcoholic beverages.
- Drug Interactions: Rasagiline should not be used with certain medications, including other MAO inhibitors, antidepressants (SSRIs, SNRIs), opioids, and dextromethorphan (a cough suppressant). These combinations can lead to dangerous drug interactions like serotonin syndrome or hypertensive crisis.
- Kidney and Liver Conditions: Rasagiline may need dose adjustments in people with liver or kidney disease. It should be used cautiously in those with impaired liver function.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: The safety of rasagiline in pregnant or breastfeeding women is not well established, so it should only be used under medical supervision if clearly necessary.
- Driving or Operating Machinery: Dizziness or drowsiness caused by rasagiline may impair your ability to drive or operate heavy machinery.
