Used For:
Aidra Tablets 20mg is indicated for:
- Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): It helps reduce inflammation, pain, and joint damage in patients with RA.
- Psoriatic Arthritis: It is sometimes used to treat psoriatic arthritis, another autoimmune condition affecting the joints.
- Other Autoimmune Diseases: In some cases, leflunomide may be prescribed for other autoimmune diseases off-label.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Headache
- High blood pressure (hypertension)
- Rash
- Hair thinning or loss
Less common but more serious side effects may include:
- Liver Toxicity: Elevation of liver enzymes, which can lead to severe liver damage.
- Infections: Increased risk of infections due to suppression of the immune system.
- Allergic Reactions: Rash, itching, swelling, or severe allergic reactions (angioedema).
- Peripheral Neuropathy: Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the limbs.
Precautions:
- Liver Function: Regular liver function tests are necessary to monitor for hepatotoxicity. Leflunomide is contraindicated in patients with liver disease or elevated liver enzymes.
- Pregnancy: Leflunomide is contraindicated in pregnancy due to its teratogenic effects (can cause birth defects). Women of childbearing age must use effective contraception while on leflunomide and undergo a drug elimination procedure before attempting pregnancy.
- Infections: Due to its immunosuppressive effects, patients are at higher risk for infections. Avoid using leflunomide in patients with active infections, and use caution in those with chronic infections.
- Blood Pressure: Leflunomide can increase blood pressure, so regular monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
- Drug Interactions: Leflunomide can interact with other medications, particularly those affecting the liver (such as methotrexate). Inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking.
