Used For:

Memantine is indicated for:

  1. Alzheimer's Disease: It is prescribed to help manage moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease symptoms. Memantine may improve memory, attention, and the ability to perform daily activities.
  2. Vascular Dementia: Sometimes used off-label for vascular dementia to improve cognitive function.

Mechanism of Action:

Memantine works as an NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate) receptor antagonist, which helps regulate glutamate activity in the brain. Excessive glutamate can lead to neuronal damage, and memantine helps protect against this excitotoxicity.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue

Less common but serious side effects may include:

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Seizures (rare)

Precautions:
