Used For:

  1. Schizophrenia: Helps manage symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.
  2. Bipolar Disorder: Used in the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes and as a maintenance therapy.
  3. Irritability Associated with Autism: Reduces aggression, mood swings, and self-harming behavior in children and adolescents.
  4. Other Psychotic Disorders: Sometimes prescribed for conditions involving severe mood disturbances or psychosis.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Risperidone include:

  • Drowsiness or sedation
  • Weight gain
  • Increased appetite
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Constipation
  • Fatigue
  • Increased saliva production
  • Restlessness (akathisia)

Serious but less common side effects:

  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (tremors, muscle stiffness)
  • Tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements, especially of the face)
  • Increased blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia)
  • High cholesterol or triglycerides
  • Orthostatic hypotension (a sudden drop in blood pressure when standing up)
  • Seizures (rare)
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by muscle rigidity, fever, and confusion)

Precautions:

  1. Cardiovascular Risk: Risperidone may cause orthostatic hypotension. Caution is advised in patients with cardiovascular disease or who are taking medications that lower blood pressure.
  2. Diabetes: Use with caution in patients with diabetes or those at risk for developing diabetes, as Risperidone can cause hyperglycemia.
  3. Weight Gain: The drug may cause significant weight gain, so monitoring of body weight is recommended.
  4. Elderly Patients with Dementia: Risperidone increases the risk of stroke and mortality in elderly patients with dementia-related psychosis. It is not recommended for this population.
  5. Tardive Dyskinesia: Prolonged use of Risperidone can cause tardive dyskinesia, a condition that involves uncontrollable movements, usually in the face and jaw.
  6. Seizure Risk: Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures.
  7. Liver and Kidney Function: Doses should be adjusted in patients with liver or kidney impairment.
  8. Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Use during pregnancy should be discussed with a doctor. Risperidone may pass into breast milk, so breastfeeding while on this medication may not be advised.
