Used For:

  • Severe Psoriasis:
    Primarily indicated for treating severe forms of psoriasis, including pustular psoriasis and erythrodermic psoriasis.
  • Disorders of Keratinization:
    Also used for other disorders characterized by abnormal skin cell differentiation and keratinization.

Side Effects:

  • Mucocutaneous Effects:
    Dryness of the skin, lips (cheilitis), and eyes; peeling; and irritation.
  • Liver Function Changes:
    Elevated liver enzymes may occur.
  • Lipid Abnormalities:
    Increased cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
  • Hair and Skin Changes:
    Hair thinning or loss, rash, and pruritus.
  • Musculoskeletal Pain:
    Joint pain or muscle aches.
  • Other:
    Headache and gastrointestinal disturbances can also occur.

Precautions:

  • Teratogenicity:
    Acitretin is highly teratogenic. Women of childbearing potential must have a negative pregnancy test before starting treatment, and effective contraception must be used during treatment and for an extended period after discontinuation (typically at least 3 years).
  • Liver and Lipid Monitoring:
    Regular monitoring of liver function tests and lipid profiles is essential.
  • Pre-existing Conditions:
    Caution in patients with liver disease, hyperlipidemia, or other significant metabolic disorders.
  • Alcohol Intake:
    Avoidance of alcohol is advised as it may exacerbate liver toxicity and alter the drug's metabolism.
