Used For:

  • Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL): Used as part of chemotherapy regimens to treat specific types of lymphoma.
  • Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL): Used alone or in combination with other chemotherapy drugs to treat CLL.
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA): Used in combination with methotrexate to reduce symptoms in patients with moderate to severe RA who haven’t responded to other treatments.
  • Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis and Microscopic Polyangiitis: Used to treat these autoimmune vasculitis conditions, which cause blood vessel inflammation.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects:

    • Fever and chills (especially with the first infusion)
    • Nausea
    • Headache
    • Fatigue
    • Body aches
  • Serious Side Effects:

    • Infusion Reactions: Can cause difficulty breathing, hives, swelling, or low blood pressure. Severe reactions may occur, especially with the first dose.
    • Infections: Increased risk of serious infections, including hepatitis B reactivation and fungal infections.
    • Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML): A rare and potentially fatal brain infection.
    • Tumor Lysis Syndrome: In cancers with large tumor burdens, rapid tumor breakdown can lead to kidney failure and electrolyte imbalances.

Precautions:

  • Pre-Medications: Patients often receive pre-medications (e.g., antihistamines, corticosteroids) before each infusion to reduce the risk of infusion reactions.
  • Infection Screening: Patients should be screened for hepatitis B and other infections before starting treatment.
  • Monitoring: Regular blood tests are often required to monitor immune function and overall health.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Women should use contraception during and after treatment as advised by their healthcare provider.
