Used For:

  • Primarily used to treat tuberculosis (TB), often as part of a combination therapy regimen.
  • Also used to treat certain types of bacterial infections, including leprosy and meningococcal infections.

Side Effects:

  • Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach pain.
  • Serious side effects may include liver toxicity (hepatitis), jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), allergic reactions, and blood disorders like anemia or low platelet count.
  • Rifampicin can cause reddish-orange discoloration of urine, sweat, and tears.
  • It can also interact with many other medications, including birth control pills, anticoagulants (blood thinners), and antiretrovirals for HIV.
