Used For:

  • Asthma Management: Helps prevent asthma symptoms, such as wheezing, shortness of breath, and coughing, and can reduce the frequency of asthma attacks.
  • Allergic Rhinitis (Hay Fever): Reduces symptoms like sneezing, runny or itchy nose, and congestion.
  • Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction: Prevents breathing difficulties triggered by physical activity.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: These may include headache, abdominal pain, indigestion, dizziness, and fatigue.
  • Serious Side Effects: Rarely, montelukast can cause mood or behavioral changes, including agitation, depression, and suicidal thoughts, as well as allergic reactions like rash or swelling.

Precautions:

  • Mental Health Monitoring: Watch for mood changes, especially in children and adolescents, and inform a healthcare provider if such symptoms occur.
  • Not for Acute Asthma Attacks: Montelukast is not a rescue medication and should not be used to treat sudden asthma attacks; a fast-acting inhaler is needed for that.
