Used For:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Helps manage symptoms like heartburn, acid reflux, and regurgitation by reducing stomach acid.
  • Erosive Esophagitis: Treats and promotes healing of esophageal inflammation caused by stomach acid.
  • Prevention of Relapse: Used to prevent the recurrence of erosive esophagitis and other acid-related conditions.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: These include diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, flatulence, and headache.
  • Serious Side Effects: Long-term use may lead to an increased risk of bone fractures, low magnesium levels, and vitamin B12 deficiency. Dexlansoprazole can also increase the risk of certain infections, such as Clostridium difficile in the intestines.

Precautions:

  • Long-Term Use: Prolonged use of PPIs has been associated with potential risks like osteoporosis and kidney disease; the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration necessary.
