Used For:

This combination is commonly used to treat intestinal infections caused by protozoa and bacteria, such as:

  • Amoebiasis: Infection caused by Entamoeba histolytica.
  • Giardiasis: Diarrheal disease caused by Giardia lamblia.
  • Trichomoniasis (for Metronidazole): Vaginal and urethral infections caused by Trichomonas vaginalis.

Side Effects:

Metronidazole:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite.
  • Metallic taste in the mouth.
  • Abdominal discomfort.
  • Dizziness or headache.
  • Dark urine (harmless).
  • Rare: Allergic reactions, seizures, or peripheral neuropathy.

Di-Iodohydroxyquinoline:

  • Nausea or diarrhea.
  • Stomach upset.
  • Iodine sensitivity (rash or thyroid issues).
  • Rare: Peripheral neuropathy, vision changes, or optic neuritis (prolonged use).

Precautions:

  • Avoid alcohol with Metronidazole: Can cause a severe reaction (disulfiram-like effect) with nausea, flushing, and palpitations.

  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use only if prescribed, especially for Metronidazole during the first trimester.
