Used For:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to reduce stomach acid, helping relieve symptoms of acid reflux and heartburn.
  • Peptic Ulcers: It is used to treat and prevent stomach ulcers and duodenal ulcers, often in combination with antibiotics to eradicate H. pylori infections.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: Treats conditions that cause excessive stomach acid production, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain.
  • Serious: Low magnesium levels with long-term use (leading to muscle cramps, irregular heartbeats), bone fractures, vitamin B12 deficiency, and rare allergic reactions.
  • Other: Potential risk of kidney issues and, rarely, an increased risk of intestinal infections.

Precautions:

  • Long-Term Use: Prolonged use may increase the risk of bone fractures, kidney problems, and vitamin B12 deficiency; use the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
